  1. Q.1 the given diagramme is prepared by Mr. Richards n Mr. Rogers in which they have presented the inter relation between approach , design and procidure in the perspective of method. In short , Richards and Rodgers have discribed the inter relationship between methods , approaches , designs & procidures.
According to them , approach always moves round the peryphery of of principles of language and language learning. Approach- a set of self evident beliefs that provides the goals and context of the language learning.
According to R & R , there r 3 views that hv played a crucial role in determining the concept of method
    1st. Structural View
    2nd. Functional view
    & 3rd. Interational view.
Structural view suggests that language is a system of technical parts related majorly to reading and writing . And language acquisition is nothing but the acquisition of these technical parts like words, phrases , discorse etc.
Functional view denotes the applied portion of the language means the language functions n how the language is used.
Interational part focuses on the main purpose or the ultimate use of language i.e. communication and interaction.
Design- clemarifies the connection of the theory of language learning come up as an approach eith the implimention of it all in vlassroom. It consists of two main things
1st. Content subject matter and 2nd the linguistic matter.
These both decide what to teach n how to teach.
Procidure- it is the last level of organization and instructional level of language . Procidure pertains to the move to move and moment to moment steps taken by the teacher in language classroom
Q.3 unlike this Mr. Anthony Edwords has showed the chronological hirarvhial relationship pf Approach , Merhod and Technique
To Edwords , approach is the umbrella term under which the concepts of method n technique falls. Here it should be clarified that techniques is nothing but procidure (Richards & Rodgers)
Edwords says that approavh decides method & method decides technique
Thus both the articles show the inter connection of approach , methods, designs, techniques,& perocidures.

  2. ANS 1: Jack C. Richards and Ted Rodgers first formulated the figure of Approach ,Design and Procedure.
ANS 2: 2 A method is defined in terms
Describe a framework for using language learning method: approach, design, and procedure. Approach is a theory
of language and of language learning. Design is a definition of linguistic
content, a specification for the selection and organization of content,
and a description of the role of teacher, learner, and teaching materials Design: design is a definition of linguistic content, a specification for the selection and organization of content. We now considered how the view of language and learning identified in a particular approach are linked to a design for language teaching.
    1) The content of instruction e.g. the syllabus
    2) Learner roles in the system
    3) Teacher roles in the system
    4) Instructional materials types and functions
Procedure is concerned with techniques and practices in a method
procedure is technique that represents the real action taken place by at first teachers and then learners in the language learning classroom. The types of exercises and practiced activities that are used in materials or suggested for teachers to follow that belongs to the time, space, equipments. Which are used in classroom activities
. Approach: Approach is define to deal with something or a way of considering or doing something so at the level of approach theories directly related to the level of design. There are three different views of language teaching method.
    1) Structural view : It is most traditional view and it focuses on structure and meaning.
    2) Functional view: Language is vehicle for the expression of meaning this approach emphasizes on meaning but not on the form or structure.
    3) Interactional view: It seems that language as a vehicle for the realization of interpersonal relations and for the performance of the social transactions between individual.
ANS 3: Mr. Anthony Edward has showed that. In language learning method, approach, design and procedure has chronological relationship between approach, Method and Technique.
Earlier, scholars haven’t dived in deep to explore the roots of theories and its consequences. The present abstract covers all the aspects of language teaching theories and methodologies. which teachers of language finds very helpful. It provides a complete package of understanding and applications of theories for better teaching. Earlier theories were incomplete and had no specific goal to benefit language teachers.

  3. Q.1 Who first formulated this figure?
Ans: Jack C. Richards & Ted Rodgers.
Q.2 What does it describe? Ans: It described about approach, design, procedure, and model. Approach is a theory of language and of language learning. Design is a definition of linguistic content, a specification for the selection and organization of content, and a description of the role of teacher, learner, and teaching materials. Procedure is concerned with techniques and practices in a method. The model is discussed with reference to recent proposals in methodology, and the application of the model is demonstrate. It Decribe about language teaching practice.
    Q. 3 How is it different from what scholars have said earlier in ELT theory?
Ans: Richards And Rodgers defined Methods in a three terms. They are as Approach, Design, And Procedure. According to Anthony Language Learning is defined as Method, Approach, Design And Techniques. It provides a complete package of understanding and applications of theories for better teaching. Earlier theories were incomplete and had no specific goal to benefit language teachers.

  4. Answer 1. The figure is described by Richards and Rodgers in 1986.
Answer 2. As per my understanding, this figure is describing a term ‘method’ as an umbrella term and Approach, design, and the procedure are the terms which comes under the umbrella term.
In the figure, approach describes a theory of the nature of language and a theory of the nature of language learning. The nature of the language learning is model of linguistic competence. To get the language competence one must follow or understand the theory of nature of language and the theory of nature of language learning. It is an account of the basic unit of language structure and central processes of language learning. To learn the second language, language learning theories must be in our concentration. As a language teacher one should understand both, the theory of nature of language and a theory of the nature of language learning.
Design is a linguistic content and specification for the selection and organization of content. In the definition Richards and Rodgers describes general and specific vies of method and criteria for the selection and organization of linguistic content. They also describe model syllabus and the form in which content of syllabus is presented. In the design the role of learners, teachers and the materials are specific.
Procedure is a description of techniques and practices in the instructional system. It describes the types of techniques and practice used by teachers for presenting and practicing language content in a language classroom.
Answer 3: - earlier scholar Anthony Edward had define all the term in hierarchical way while Richards and Rodgers had describe that all the terms are inter related with each other. Edward said that the approach is an umbrella term and Richards and Rodgers describe that the techniques and techniques and procedure both term are same. Anthony Edward said that approach decides method and method decides techniques.

  5. Second language teaching, from the years has been seen many changes. These changes have cantered on teaching methodologies, which have been influenced by views of language in particular how language is acquired both as first and second language. We have seen, at the beginning of the period the prominence of the grammar translation method, which focus on the explicit translation of grammatical structures and traditional learning. Later in the middle of last century the direct method emerged which could be described as a reaction to the over emphasis of grammar interaction in second language teaching.
New theories of first and second language acquisition, Where there is a focus on either communication, interaction ,or the completion of tasks. A device of framework which can allow us to describe, evaluate, and compare various approaches.
Richards and Rodgers framework, framework of second language teaching is based on Edward Anthony’s 1963 original model, which sought to explain the relationship between theoretical concepts of language and teaching practices they inspired. Richards and Rodgers, describes approach as a set of assumptions about language and language learning theory. Method is a plan for presenting language material based upon an approach, Techniques are based on a method which in turn to an approach.
In Richards and Rodgers framework, approach carries the same meaning as in Anthony’s model. They discuss approach in terms of theory of language and theory of language learning. The framework is useful in understanding, evaluating, and comparing various methodologies.

  6. ANS.1: Jack C. Richards, Ted Rodgers.
ANS.2: Richards and Rodgers have described about Approach, Design, Procedure and Model.
    According to them
Approach: Approach always moves round the principle of language and language learning a set of self-evident belief that provides a goal and context of the language learning.
Design: Design is the definition of linguistic content. A specification of the selection, organization of content a description of the role of the teacher, learner and teaching material.
Procedure: Procedure is concerned with techniques and practice in a method. Procedure is description of techniques and practice in the instructional system. It describes the types of techniques and practice used by teachers for presenting and practicing language content in a language classroom.
ANS:3: Mr. Edward said that the approach is an umbrella term. Richards and Rodgers decide that techniques and procedure both are same. Mr. Antony Edward had sawed that in language learning Method, Design, and Procedure has chronological relation between Approach, Design and Techniques. It provides some complete package of understanding and applications of theories for better teaching.
Antony Edward said that Approach decide Method. And Method decide Techniques.

  7. Ans:1 Jack C Richards and Ted Rodgers model(1986)first formulated this figure.
Ans:2 It describe about a framework for the systematic description and comperison of method.A method is defined in terms of three levels:Approach, design and procedure.
(a)Approach:-Approach encompasses both theories of language and language learning.
it has three different theoretical views(i)Structural (ii)Functional (iii)Interactional
(i)Structural view:- It is a most traditional view and it focuses on structure and meaning.
(ii)Functional view:- Languages vehicle for the expression of meaning. this approach emphasizes on meaning but not on the form or structre.
(iii)Interactional view:-It is two way communication.1. it focuses on communicative competence in the target language.2.Focus on the petterns of moves, acts, and exchanges in communication.
Structural functional or interactional models of language provide the axioms and theoretical framework of support underlying particular methods of language teaching.
    (b) Design:-It specifics the relationship of these theories to ciassroom materials and activites design is a materials which are used to teach second language in ciassroom.we now cosidered how the view of language and learning identified in a particular approach are linked to a design for language teaching.
1> The content of instruction (e.g syiiabus)
    2>Learner roles in the system
    3>Teacher roles in the system
    4>Instructional materials types and functions.
    (c) Procedure:-Procedure is techinique that represents the real action taken place by at first teacher. Here the focus is on the actual moment to moment techiniques, practice, and activity that operate in teaching and learning a language according to a partular method.
Ans:3 As Antony Edward createsd departure,we use a three parts approach, method and technique. The first level approach define those assumption beliefs and theories about the nature of language learning which operate as reference points and provide a theoretical fundation for what language teachers in ciassrooms. The second level specific the relationship of theories of language and learning to both the form and activities in instructional materials and activities in instructional setting. The third level procedure comprise the classroom techniques and practices which are consequences of particular approaches and designs.today we have new theories of these term given by Jack C Richards and Ted Rodgers.

  8. Ans:-1 The figure was first formulated by Jack C. Richards and Ted Rogers

And:-2 It desires the co-relation between Approach, Design and Procedure. It modify Antony's terminology and figure. Approach is a set of beliefs deals with the language teaching and learning. An Approach is an self evidence. In Approach they describe three theoretical views 1) Structural view
    2)Functional view
    3)Interactional view
Structural view defines the grammatical units that focuses on form.
Functional view deals with the function of language.
Interactional view is the social transactions between individuals that mainly emphasis on communication
Design is a definition of linguistic content and specification of content.
Procedure is types of techniques used by teachers for presenting content.
And:-3 Compared to Anthony Edwards he takes approach as an umbrella term that include methods and there are many techniques in perticular method. Inshort he show the chronological relationship between Approach, Method and Techniques on the contrary Richards and Rodgers take Method as an umbrella term and show the inter relationship between Approach, Design and Procedure.

  9. 1.Jack C.Richards and Ted Rodgers formulated this framework.
2.It decides the correlation of Approach, Design and Procedure.
Approach is a set of beliefs which includes the nature of language learning and teaching.Approach is an axiomatic term. There are three views in approach.
    Structural view
    Functional view
    Interactional view
Design means the designed activity that a teacher uses for the students in the classroom.
Procedure means methods or techniques used by the teachers in the classroom for the students.
3.Anthony Edwards and Richards and Rodgers have a great relationship between both of these articles. In both the articles they both mention the meaning of Approach and Procedure I same way.Approach is an umbrella term. And they trio term Approach, Method and Techniques all of them have a correlation between each of them. And so we can conclude that both this articles have interrelationships between them.
