Dear all,
For the first task,
1. Read the article Approach, Method and Technique by Anthony Edwards (published in the ELT Journal in 1963). This is a seminal article on this topic and will help you in your preparation of notes and presentations for exams. Each group has a hard copy. You can find it on the following link also.
2. Note down the main points, especially the definitions of the terms "approach", "method" and "technique".
3. Post them as a comment here. Don't forget to add the names of the your group members.
Your comments should be posted here by tomorrow evening.
Thank you very much for your co-operation.

Language teachers have developed, adopted, invented and adapted a variety of terms which they apply in their activities. According to Edwards, the field of teaching English as a foreign language is surrounded by different terminologies. Earlier, teachers used to apply a variety of methods for teaching which now has a solid ground. All the methods invented with time have been just polished by researchers.
ReplyDeleteThe trio of terms:
“Techniques carry out a method which is consistent with an approach.”
Approach:
An approach is a set of assumptions which defines the nature of the language and the nature of language teaching and learning. A particular method is developed using an approach. It provides a point of view which will help the learners understand the main idea of a concept. An approach is axiomatic. It is the source of principles and practices of language teaching.
Method:
Method is a by-product of an approach. A method follows a plan for the structural presentation of language material. No part of a method contradicts with each other and is based upon the selected approach. A method has to be developed with an appropriate plan and should be carried out smoothly. It is a system which clearly explains how to teach a language. A method is procedural.
Technique:
A thing which actually takes place in a classroom is a technique. It is a particular strategy which is used for immediate result. Techniques must be consistent with a method. The usage of techniques differs from person to person. A teacher might involve different techniques that contradict others. A technique is situational and depends on the teacher. It is not necessary that a technique used by a teacher should be followed by another one. The selection of a technique depends on the individual artistry and composition of the class.

Language teachers have invented variety of terms which describes the activity in which they angage and concerned with the teaching of English as foreign.
ReplyDeleteThe trio of terms
1. APPROACH
- An approach is organizational key that carry out a method. Approach is set of correlative assumptions dealing with the nature of language and the nature of language teaching and learning. It describesthe nature of the subject matter to be taught. It shows us a philosophy an artical of faith something one believes but cannot necessary prove.
2. METHOD
- Method is an overall plan for thr orderly presentation of language material.
The age of students, his cultural background, and his previous experience with English modify the method employed. The experience of the teacher and his level of English mastery are significant. The goal of course must be consider weather it is aimed at reading, fluency speech, inculcationg translation skills all shape methodology.
3. TECHNIQUE
- Technique is a implimentational - that which actually takes place in a classroom. It is a perticular trick, stretagy or contrivance used to accomplish in immediate objective. Techniques depends on the teacher, his individual artistry and on composition of the class. The effectiveness of a perticular technique must be taken in relation to method. The recently- popular teaching machines are techniques.
Machines have enjoyed great favour recently but their value depends on method and approach.

language teacher have adopted, adapted, invented and developed a bewildering variety of terms which describe the activities in which they engage an the beliefs which they hold. we talk and write of the aural approach and the audio-lingual method ;the translation approach;the direct method and the mimic -and-memorize method of language pedagogy. perhaps it will be useful for the readers of ELT to consider three new definitions. we might well find out that language teachers do not differ among themselves as much as has been here to fore supposed. The definition below are therefore presented as a pedagogical filling system within which many ideas, opposing or compatible, may be filed.
ReplyDeleteThe trio of terms which I am attempting to re-locate in the scheme of definitions are approach, method, and technique. The arrangement is hierarchical. The organizational key is that techniques carry out a method which is consistent with an approach. The definitions are offered with some diffidence - there are many roads to Nirvana -,and this is certainly not the only route. Not every aspect of language teaching has been referred to this framework. It is quite possible that modifications and refinements are desirable.
Approach
First, approach ,as set of correlative assumptions dealing with the nature of language and the nature of language teaching and learning. An approach is axiomatic. It describes the nature of the subject matter to be taught. It states a point of view ,a philosophy, an article of faith- something which one believes but cannot necessarily prove. It is often unarguable except in terms of the effectiveness of the methods which grow out of it. If language is accepted as aural-oral, an obvious corollary to these assumptions is that writing is a secondary manifestation and ultimately speech-based. I must ,however, immediately add that this is not necessarily a statement of the relative importance of speech and writing. One can,of course, argue that writing ,often more deliberate and thoughtful ,and always more permanent than speech, is therefore more important.
Method
Method is an overall plan for the orderly presentation of language material,no part of which contradicts, and all of which is based upon, the selected approach. An approach is axiomatic, a method is procedural. The approach ,again,is the aural-oral . The methods are frequently called mim-mem (mimic-memorize),and pattern practice. The experience of the teacher and his level of English mastery are significant. The goal of course must be considered whether it is aimed at reading , fluency in speech , inculcating translation skill _all these shape methodology.
Technique
A technique is implementational-that which actually takes place in a classroom. It is a particular trick, stratagem ,or contrivance used to accomplish an immediate objective. Techniques must be consistent with a method ,and therefore in harmony with an approach as well. Technique depend on the teacher , his individual artistry ,and on the composition of the class. Particular problems can be tackled equally successfully by the different techniques.
Machines have enjoyed great favour recently. Great claims have been made for their effectiveness in language teaching. In truth , they have great value. But their value depends on method and approach.

ReplyDeleteIn the article mr. Edwords talks about the three very much frequently used terms in the field of language teaching Aproches , methods and techniques. He describes approach as a set of beliefs that is essential in oder to use a method then he talks about methods. To him method is npthing but a systematic plan to present the language material in a proper oder.
ReplyDeleteThe at last he talks about techniques. He states that technique is"...a perticular trick, stratagem or controviance used to accomplish an immidiate objective." Like methods in aprroach , there can be an ample of techniques going with one method.
So in this way edwords elaborates the chronological assending series of the goven terms.

ReplyDeletefrom the article of Anthony Edwards, as per my understanding, Approach is an umbrella term and methods and techniques both are the hierarchical with the term Approach.
Approach :- approach is a set of correlative assumptions dealing with the nature of language and the nature of language teaching and learning. it is evident without proof of teaching and learning process.
Method :- method is an overall plan for the orderly presentation of language material , no part of which contradicts, and all of which is based upon, the selected approach. method is procedural. there may be many different methods in one approach. a teacher can adapt different method to teach same topic to the different learners. a teacher can apply the method by analyzing the situation, time, level of understanding. method are frequently called mim-mem,and pattern practice.
generally a learner observe the surroundings and try to mimic the language of his/her teachers or parents or care-takers and behave the same. so from this it can understand that the pattern of language leaning will be memorize.
Techniques :- it is implementational. as a method, a teacher can apply different techniques to explain/taught same topic to different leaners. and it takes place in a language class room.

The languages are adapted , adopted , invented and developed is always varied to describe or explain our ideas or thoughts. As our concerns has been that English language is foreign language for almost twenty years. There are various methods in speaking and writing like aural approach, the direct method, the mimic and memorise method, pattern practice techniques of language pedagogy. According to Anthony Edwards there are three main pedagogy terms, that are Approach, Method and Technique.
ReplyDeleteApproach: - an approach as a set of correlative assumptions dealing with the nature of language and the nature of language learning and teaching. An approach is strong axiomatic. It describe the nature of the subject matter to be taught. It is often unarguable except in terms of the effectiveness of the method which grows out it. The language teaching and learning take three forms of priority statements procedural, comparison, all arising out of the linguistic assumptions.
Method:- method is over all plan for the orderly presentation of language material no part of which contradicts. If we have one approach then we have lot of methods. The aim of the method at reading fluency in speech including the translation skill. These all are the shape of methodology. The structure of the method is drilled and build up the situation through the addition of lexical items.
Technique:- technique is implementation that which actually takes place in a class room. It is a particular trick, strategy or contrivance used to accomplished in immediate objectives. Techniques must be consistent with a method and therefore in harmony with an approach as well. Techniques depends on the teacher, his individual artistry and on the composition of the class. Teacher taught the languages by the linguistic techniques. Laboratory tape recorders and phonographs are techniques. The recent popular teaching machines are technique.

teachers of English Language have adopted, adapted, invented and developed variety of terms which describes the activities in which they engage.Anthony Edwards have given definitions on terms:
ReplyDelete1.Approach:It is a set of correlative assumptions dealing with the nature of language.Teaching and Learning. An Approach is axiomatic. There are two types of Approaches:
a)First is Aural-Oral Approach
b)Second is Approach related language teaching and learning- take the form of three priorities statements:
1.Procedural Statements, a Comparison statements, all arising out of the linguistic assumptions.
Procedural Assumptions states that a )languages are habits b)Habits are established by repetition and c)languages must be taught through repetitions of some sort.
2.Method:It is an overall plan for the orderly presentation of languages material
A method is procedural. The goal of a course must be considered that whether it is aimed at reading , fluency in speech inculcating translation skill all those shape methodology. The methods are frequently called mim-mem(mimic-memorize) and pattern practice.
3.Technique:It is an implementational method- that which actually takes place in a classroom. It is a particular trick which is used to accomplish and immediate objective.Techniques must be consistent with a method. This article is about Method as an Umbrella term. it involves three terms via Approach, Method and Techniques. This article is of Edward. M. Antony in 1963. He said before some years language teachers adopted and developed a bewildering variety of terms which describes activities in which they engage and the beliefs they hold.
ReplyDelete1. Approach - It is a set of correlative assumptions dealing with the nature of the language. It is like a philosophy, an article of Faith which one can believe but not prove. It has two assumptions for exemplify the meaning of Approach. They are Linguistic assumptions and Language teaching and learning assumptions. They talk about skills and their importance. Like language is structured uniquely. It has oral aural aspects which says that understanding spoken language is more important before oral production.
2. Method – Method is an overall plan for the orderly presentation of language. Material, no part of which contradicts and all of which is based upon, the selected approach. The order will be influenced by the nature of student’s language as compared to English. Teaching English to speakers of Chinese differ methodologically. The age of student, his cultural background and his previous experience with English modify the method employed. The experience of the teacher and his level of English mastery are significant.
3. Technique – A technique is implementational – that which actually takes place in a classroom. Techniques must be consistent with a method, and therefore in harmony with an Approach as well. Techniques depend on the teacher, his individual artistry, and on the composition of the class.
